Ashokan Reservoir and Rondout Reservoir, Two of Ulster County’s Most Beautiful Resources

Here in Ulster County, water bodies are abundant. We have over 36 bodies that are considered significant enough to be referred to as a lake or pond. Of those 36 lakes or ponds, 20 of them are used as reservoirs. Of the different types of reservoirs, the type that exist in Ulster County are “dam across a valley” reservoirs. This type of reservoir relies mostly on naturally formed features to effectively hold the water. The result is a beautiful body of water that not only supplies humans with drinking water but also contributes greatly to wild life habitat. The two largest and most popular reservoirs in the Ulster County area are the Ashokan Reservoir and the Rondout Reservoir that are owned by New York city and provide some of the water used to supply the city. Thanks to both the Rondout and Ashokan reservoirs, Bald Eagles have made a spectacular comeback from near extinction.
Beyond its’ obvious benefit as drinking water and wildlife habitat, the reservoirs are open to the public providing a great source for recreation. The reservoir itself and the land around the reservoir can be accessed with permit, for hiking, hunting and fishing. The permits are free and easy to obtain. However, it is one of only two reservoirs in Ulster County that supply water to New York City. Of those reservoirs supplying water to NYC, the Ashokan is considered the deepest at over 190 feet deep at its deepest point.
Rondout Reservoir
Rondout Reservoir is part of New York City’s water supply network. It is located 75 miles northwest of the city in the Catskill Mountains, near the southern end of Catskill Park, split between the towns of Wawarsing in Ulster County and Neversink in Sullivan County. It is the central collection point for the city’s Delaware System, which provides half its daily consumption.
So what do reservoirs have to do with real estate?
Resesrvoirs, because of the beauty, contrinute aestheticly to an property lucky enough to get a view. In addition, homes previously built or newly built in the vicinity of the water shed must adhere to strict guidelines. These guidlines are put into place to protect the watershed while simutaneously protecting your real estate investment. Home owners lucky enough to purchase property near the watershed will benefit not only from the beauty that surrounds but from a financially sound investment.
