Recent estimates completed by the United States Census Bureau for the year ending July 1, 2006 puts the population at 182,742 residents. It is the most northern county and in the New York Metropolitan Area making it a premier destination for New York City residents looking to purchase second homes. The county is named after Irish province of Ulster, then an earldom of the Duke of York (later James II).

Ulster County has within it, a large part of Catskill Park and the Catskill Forest Preserve. Years ago, Delaware and Hudson Canal transported Pennsylvania coal to Kingston via the Hudson River.

The old Ulster/Delaware Railroad runs through Ulster County leaving behind what is now referred to as the "Rail Trail". There are railroad attractions that showcase the history of the rail road: Trolley Museum of New York, Catskill Mountain Railroad, and Empire State Railway Museum.
