The Community of Esopus

Esopus was named from the Native American word “esepu” which means “high banks”.  Beautifully situated on the west banks of the majestic Hudson River, Esopus is approximately 100 miles North of New York City. It is bounded to the North by the Rondout Creek which is home to the Kingston Strand with shopping and many fine restaurants. In addition to the Hudson and Walkill Rivers, the Rondout, Black, and Swartekill Creeks all wind through Esopus. It is a short ride to Kingston, Poughkeepsie and New Palts which all offer fine dining and diverse shopping. For recreation there is easy access to boating on the Hudson River and Rondout Creek with both Minnewaska State Park and the Mohonk Preserve a short ride away. Esopus has so much to offer residents and visitors alike. Visit historic homes, apple orchards, go fishing and check the parks, museums, fine shops and farm stands. Esopus has something for everyone.
