Located half way between New York City and Albany, Ulster County has a unique landscape unlike any other in New York State. From east to west Ulster County is vertically separated by four distinct regions.
The first region “River Communities” is comprised of the towns of Saugerties, Ulster, Kingston, Esopus, Lloyd, Marlboro and the city of Kingston. From Kingston north to Saugerties the Catskill Mountains form a picturesque backdrop to the western side of the Mid-Hudson River Valley. From Kingston south to Marlboro Hudson River travelers are treated to a view of the Shawangunk Ridge and the mid to southern Catskill regions beyond.
Continuing west you are treated to the “Shawangunk Region” also known to locals as the “Gunks”. This area begins in the north with the town of Rosendale and continues south through the towns of New Paltz, Gardiner, Plattekill and Shawangunk. The picturesque towering cliffs of the Gunks form a dramatic backdrop to the farms of the Wallkill Valley. The Gunks are home to world class rock climbing, the famous Mohonk Mountain House and over 7,000 preserved acres cared for by the Mohonk Preserve.
Further west beyond the Shawangunk Ridge is the fertile bottom land of the Rondout Valley. From north to south the valley is formed by the towns of Hurley, Marbletown, Rochester and Wawarsing. Nestled between the Gunks to the east and Catskill Mountains to the west, tourists and residents are routinely treated to spectacular mountain views. This valley is lined with farms, grows world class produce and is particularly known for its corn. The hamlets of Stone Ridge, High Falls, Accord and the village of Ellenville provide interesting tourist attractions such as the D & H Canal Museum, D & H Rail Trail, Five Locks Walk and Shadowland Theatre as well as u-pick farms and farm-stands.
Going west from the Rondout Valley you enter the Catskill Region. Rolling mountains, crystal clear streams and deep valleys form this rugged, mysterious and fun landscape. This region is largely comprised of the towns of Woodstock, Shandaken, Hardenburgh, Denning and Olive. It is known for world class trout fishing, as well as miles upon miles of hiking trails, skiing, and hunting. It is truly a sportsman’s dream. If art, shopping, theatre or fine cuisine are your thing you can find it all in Woodstock, Phoenicia and along the Route 28 corridor.
For more details on specific communities please select from list to the left. Wherever your interests fall, Ulster County has something for everyone.
